Background of the Study
Poverty is a pervasive issue that significantly impacts students’ access to quality education. In Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Ogun State, financial constraints limit access to essential educational resources, from textbooks to modern learning facilities (Olawumi, 2023). Poverty affects not only the material aspects of education but also influences students’ motivation, attendance, and overall academic achievement. Studies indicate that impoverished students are more likely to face challenges such as inadequate nutrition, poor learning environments, and limited access to technology (Adeola, 2024). These conditions contribute to a cycle of underachievement and hinder long-term socio-economic development. Moreover, community support systems are often insufficient to counteract the negative impacts of poverty (Daramola, 2025). This research investigates how poverty influences educational access and quality, highlighting the disparities and proposing targeted interventions to improve learning outcomes for economically disadvantaged students.
Statement of the Problem
In Ijebu-Ode, poverty has emerged as a major barrier to accessing quality education. Many students are deprived of necessary learning resources and supportive environments due to financial constraints (Olawumi, 2023). This situation results in lower academic achievement and perpetuates the cycle of poverty. The lack of effective government and community interventions further exacerbates the problem, leading to significant educational disparities. There is a critical need to evaluate the impact of poverty on educational access and identify strategies that can mitigate these adverse effects, ensuring equitable opportunities for all students.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of poverty on access to quality education.
To identify specific challenges faced by students from low-income families.
To propose strategies to improve educational opportunities for impoverished students.
Research Questions:
How does poverty affect students’ access to quality education?
What specific challenges do impoverished students face?
What interventions can improve educational access for low-income families?
Research Hypotheses:
Poverty negatively impacts access to quality education.
Students from low-income families face significant resource constraints.
Targeted interventions can improve educational outcomes for impoverished students.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the detrimental effects of poverty on educational access, providing critical insights for stakeholders. The findings will guide policymakers and educators in developing effective interventions to mitigate the adverse effects of poverty. By addressing these challenges, the research aims to enhance learning outcomes and promote equitable education for all students in the community.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the effect of poverty on students’ access to quality education in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Ogun State. It does not extend to other socio-economic factors or regions.
Definitions of Terms:
Poverty: The state of having insufficient financial resources to meet basic needs.
Educational Access: The ability to obtain quality education without financial or social barriers.
